Château de la Maltroye is a beautiful 18th century château with 15th century cellars located at the top of the hill in Chassagne-Montrachet. The Cournut family bought the estate in 1940 and today it is Jean-Pierre Cournut at the helm who is an extremely thoughtful, serious winemaker whom we have had the pleasure of getting to know over the last 15 years while tasting his new vintage each year. Important parcels, old vines and traditional winemaking are reflected in his offerings.Château de la Maltroye’s vineyards are located right next to the château and are considered to be some of the best Premier Cru vineyards in the village. The domain produces around 70,000 bottles per year, 60% white and 40% red and uses traditional Burgundy grape varieties – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Jean-Pierre Cornut, the current wine-grower, has magnificently reinvigorated this domain which now produces some of the best Chassagne-Montrachet on the market.
Exporter and Burgundy Expert Jeanne-Marie de Champs explains, “The wines of Château de la Maltroye are made with the precision of an engineer, precise detail, a constant search for the best expression of the microclimates and terroirs, and harmony with the wood.”
