The Toro Distillery is the tale of a family and a territory, in which it is deeply and historically rooted. The Toros have embedded their bicentennial business in Tocco da Casauria, in a strong bond with its green fields, so close and welcoming: in 1817 the chemist Beniamino Toro senior, created the Centerba, a precious liqueur made of wild and natural plants, wisely blended, select and picked from expert hands on the slopes of the Maiella Madre and Morrone. Carried in special sacks to the family workshop, today a modern and well-equipped family-run business, Centerba – whose name is from “Centum Herbora” (hundred herbs), in dialect “Cianterba” – is produced through their slow, natural infusion in peculiar butts, without the addition of sugar and flavours, in ambiances void of humidity and temperature leaps. The liqueur obtained through this careful and patient making is a digestive with its peculiar emerald-green, high proof and fine flavored, with the prevalence of mint. A product, strong and gentile, like a native of Abruzzi is. In the beginning appreciated by pilgrims and shepherds on their ways through the Tremonti Gorges and the valley of the river Pescara, it became, then, known as an effective medicament: Centerba Toro was, in fact, used, for its healing properties, in the Reign of Naples in 1884 during the epidemic cholera; everyday wagons of the curative product left Tocco da Casauria towards the Neapolitan City. Today Centerba Toro is a craft product, pride of the liqueurs’ tradition of the Abruzzi, appreciated all over the world. Its secret composition is still the one of the 19th century, scrupulously preserved and passed on descents: a recipe that commemorates the lure of these places and expresses the climates of this land in the most authentic manner.
